Updates from Room 117 12/13

This week’s Updates from Room 117 is chocked full of information. This week in mathematics we will begin working with making numeric patterns and working with rate of change. Students will be bringing home a variety of items to help them practice this skill. The key piece of information we will be working to instill is that when looking for a pattern were are looking for a constant change By the end of the week we are hoping that students will be able to say I can identify and create numeric patterns.

This week we are taking a look at the author’s purpose. Why do authors write the pieces they do? We will be reading a series of non-fiction and folk tale pieces to develop a better understanding of what drives authors. This week’s tasks will really allow us to build on our understanding of fact vs. opinion.

Our students are also working to share their opinions with a wider audience. Last week we launched our Room 117 book review blog. Students will continue to post reviews of the books they have read. I encourage you to read your students review and leave a comment. Comments are moderated, for safety purposes, but should appear within 24 hours. This tool is aimed at getting our students to read with a purpose, practice the skill of summarizing, as well as get into the routine of proofing work to share with a global audience. Putting Science in the hands of Scientist

While working with mixtures and solutions this week we had several opportunities to work hands on with science. Students really enjoyed this process and have a solid understanding of just what it takes to create mixtures and solutions.

What an excellent way to help our students meet this reporting topic:

Updates from Room 117

This week in mathematics we continue to work on recognizing the properties of mathematics and how we see them appear in word problems and everyday life. Students have reviewed the concept of the associative property, as well as the commutative property, and this week we will dive into applying the distributive property and differentiating how and when to use each property.

This week we are working on finishing up our study of mixtures and solutions. Last week students worked to create mixtures and solutions and identify the different parts. This week we will continue to talk about separating mixtures and take our solutions and mixtures quiz before the end of the week.  Students are really showing a great understanding and enjoying the experiments we are completing to better understand these concepts.

Communication Arts:
We continue to talk about problem and solution. Students are working in small groups to prove their understanding of the topic, as well as working with different stories that challenge them to pinpoint the problem and solution.  Students also continue to work with figurative language, and will focus on using it in their writing to display their understanding of the concept. Our Treasures unit for this week is titled “Focus on China” we will be using these stories to help us explore problem and solution, as well as fact vs. opinion.
